Korean culture has common belief and behavior in promoting men¢¥s health. It is called ¢¥Jungreok(ïñÕô)¢¥. Men have a great deal of interests in Jungreok(ïñÕô). Despite of the enormous concern about the men¢¥s Jungreok(ïñÕô), studies on this issue ares almost non-existent. The purpose of the study is to describe the meaning of ¢¥Jungreok(ïñÕô)¢¥.
This study was performed by using qualitative research method. Data were collected by face to face interviews with 7 men and open questionnaires with 143 men from 28 Aug. to 20 Sept., 2000. Data were analyzed by content analysis.
Korean men¢¥s Jungreok(ïñÕô) has been categorized into ¢¥the indicator of health¢¥, ¢¥the ability to engage in sexual activities¢¥, ¢¥essential life power¢¥, ¢¥the driving force and passion needed for work achievements¢¥, and ¢¥self-confidence on life¢¥. Based on the above, it has been deduced that Jungreok(ïñÕô) is ¢¥the symbol of men¢¥s health¢¥.
Further studies regarding tonic medicine and tonic dishes and acts of enhancing Jungreok(ïñÕô), preferred by many men for the strengthening of Jungreok(ïñÕô), is much needed.
